This series of events runs alongside the Breastfeed: Portraits with Purpose exhibition by artist Leanne Pearce in the Atrium Art Gallery (open Monday 9 March - Friday 1 May). The full programme of events below is available here. Tickets for these events are free of charge but places are limited so please book early to guarantee your ticket.
Parking information: For events starting after 4pm parking is available on a first come, first served basis. For events prior to 4pm limited parking is available but must be booked in advance when you register for a ticket. Once places have been allocated no further parking will be available. A map and directions to the campus is available on our website.

What do babies eat? Childrens’ Perceptions of infant feeding. Catherine Angell, Head of Department for Midwifery and Health Sciences, and Lead Midwife for Education at Bournemouth University
This research used 'draw, write and tell' to explore primary school children's thoughts about how babies are fed. Children between the ages of 4 and 11 years offered lively and thoughtful ideas, which will be discussed in this presentation via their artwork and words.

1pm – 2pm. Mother’s Experiences of breastfeeding from differing perspectives. Alison Taylor, Deputy Head of Department for Midwifery and Health Sciences and Programme Lead for Midwifery and Luisa Cescutti-Butler, Senior Lecturer in Midwifery.
This talk will draw from findings from two PhD theses including mother’s experiences of breastfeeding using video diaries and mother’s experiences of breastfeeding their late pre-term infants.
Wednesday 18 March
K101, Kimmeridge House
3pm – 4pm. Breastfeeding posture: what every parent needs to know. Emily Norton DC (Doctor of Chiropractic) MChiro, Member of LCGB (Lactation Consultants of Great Britain) and ILCA (International Lactation Consultant Association) and interns from AECC.
This talk given by final year students from the AECC UC will include why the baby’s posture is important in terms of breastfeeding and will include information on tummy time, laying comfortably on the back and head direction preference.

6pm - 7pm. Supporting mothers to reach their breastfeeding goals. Alison Taylor is Deputy Head of Department for Midwifery and Health Sciences. Programme Lead for Midwifery. Baby Friendly Initiative Lead and Lead Midwife for the BU and AECC UC Interprofessional New-born feeding Clinic and Emily Norton DC (Doctor of Chiropractic) MChiro, Member of LCGB (Lactation Consultants of Great Britain) and ILCA (International Lactation Consultant Association).
Wednesday 1 April
K103, Kimmeridge House
2pm – 3pm. Parenting Science Gang parent-designed research projects. Sophie Payne-Gifford, volunteer with Parenting Science Gand and Senior Research Fellow, School of Life Sciences, University of Hertfordshire.
In this hour-long session, Sophie will cover:
-the practicalities of running Parenting Science Gang
-its breastmilk study
-its breastfeeding and healthcare experiences projects
-reflections on undertaking research analysis with volunteers
She will also briefly cover the other Parenting Science Gang topics if attendees are interested. They were picky eating, babywearing, obese women's birth experiences, flexi-schooling and (un) gendered parenting.
3pm – 4pm. Mother’s Milk: The Ethics of How Babies Are Fed. Fiona Woollard, Professor of Philosophy, University of Southampton
4pm – 5pm. Virtual breastfeeding support in the digital age - listening to parents. Liz Stacey and Caroline Baddiley, Dorset Health Care Breastfeeding Advisory and Support Team
In response to the move towards digital communication within healthcare and consumer preferences, Dorset Healthcare’s Breastfeeding Advisory Team developed a virtual breastfeeding community using Facebook.
We are delighted to be joined by local parents who will share their stories and their perceptions of professional support. In addition George, a local Dad, will talk about the emotional and practical aspects of supporting a breastfeeding partner.

2pm - 3pm. PhD Breastfeeding Research at BU. Amy Miller BSc MSc. PhD student Bournemouth University. Visiting researcher AECC University College & Hazel Tennant RM, BSc, MSc. This session is aimed at PGRs, academics and healthcare professionals.

2pm – 3pm. Relationship between perceived pressure to breastfeed and maternal mental health. Dr Andrew Mayers, Principal Academic at Bournemouth University
3.15pm – 5pm. Whose Shoes? Jilly Ireland, RGN, RM, BA, MSc, PGcert HELT, Professional Midwifery Advocate at East Dorset Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
The 'Whose Shoes?' board game is a useful interactive tool to aid discussion around maternity care. Today we will talk about infant feeding and anything which comes up for the players around the subject and the experiences and feelings of those around the table. The game encourages players to take on perspectives gained from 'walking in others’ shoes and relating the stories and comments in the game to their own lived experiences and feelings.
